Our story
The building went up for the harbour pilots, who needed rooms close to the water and a cellar that stayed cold. Later it was a guesthouse, then a bank, then empty for most of a decade. We kept the brick face, the shutters and the cellar, and rebuilt everything else around a simple idea: a hotel on this coast should be warm, quiet and close enough to the beach that you do not need a plan.
The cold cellar became the Ocomanse casino, the ground floor our kitchen, and the roof a sauna with a window that faces the sea rather than the street.
Rooftop sauna
The sauna sits under the roof with a window the length of the bench, so you watch the ferries go out while you sit. There is a cold shower, a quiet room and loungers facing north. It is free for guests and open from early morning until late, which in winter is most of the day.
18+ Casino floor — over 18s only
One floor below the lobby, the casino opens in the middle of the afternoon, which on this coast is when the weather usually decides to turn. Slot machines along the walls, roulette and card tables in the middle, and a bar that looks out at the promenade. Open to anybody of 18 and over, guest or not.
